The Ontario Junior Hockey League’s Western Conference is a closely contested conference at the moment, with 8 teams sitting within 7 points of each other, ranging from 3rd place all the way to 10th place. Standings like these make each game crucial for the Georgetown Raiders, who currently sit 5th with 16 points; only 5 back of 2nd place. Georgetown has a big opportunity this week to vault up the standings if all goes according to plan.
This week, the Raiders face two more challenges. Thursday, Oct. 18 at 7:10PM sees the Raiders make a trip to Leamington, Ontario to take on the Flyers. The Flyers joined the OJHL this past summer as part of the league’s expansion to 22 teams. The Flyers sit at 6th place in the conference, tied with Georgetown at 16 points with a record of 7-4-0-2. This is an important game for both clubs with 2 valuable early-season points up for grabs. Leamington’s leading scorer is forward Cayden Faust with 18 points in 13 games played this season. This will be Georgetown’s first meeting of the season with the Flyers; expect a high-flying offensive battle from both sides knowing that such valuable positioning is on the line.
Saturday, Oct. 21 at 5:30PM, the Raiders return home to the Alcott for a Rivalry Game against the Burlington Cougars. This is the second meeting of the season for the Raiders are Cougars. Georgetown took down the Cougars 2-1 in overtime in the first matchup of the year, with Brandon Kakei scoring both goals for the Raiders. Expect the Cougars to come out flying early in the first to try and avenge that loss earlier this year. The Cougars sit at 8th in the West with 13 points, just 3 behind the Raiders. The point and standings implications of this game are huge. Cougars forwards Justin Legault and Joe Nikac lead Burlington with 10 points each on the season.
Another important chapter in the Georgetown/Burlington rivalry will be written Saturday night at 5:30PM, Raider Nation. Will you be there to support your Raiders? Tickets are $15.00 at the door. Beer sales will begin at 5PM with puck drop at 5:30PM.
