The Georgetown Raiders came away from last night’s game in Caledon with a big 6-1 victory. Here’s what you need to know.

The Raiders began the game with a Teddy Puccini breakaway goal at the halfway point in the first period to lead 1-0 after one period. The first frame was back and forth play, with Georgetown leading 12-5 in shots after the frame. The second period is where the Raiders came out of their shell, exploding with four unanswered goals in the period. Goal scorers included Quinn Tavares, Gabe Ciarallo, Carson Lloyd, and Kristian Lamanna. The second period was all Raiders, as Georgetown dominated the flow and outshot the Admirals 19-6. Luca Hobbs would end Finn Marshall’s bid for a shutout early in the third period. Kaleb Nelson would restore the five goal lead in the final frame and this game would end with a decisive 6-1 score for your Raiders.

From front to back, this was a dominant game for Georgetown. As I wrote in the preview, Georgetown needed to score often and in bunches in order to win, and they did just that. Disciplined hockey was present as well; Georgetown only took three minor penalties throughout the entire game. This was an impressive win for the Raiders and an important one. Heading into the weekend and a tough matchup with the Collingwood Blues, the Raiders have won five of their last six matches.

Saturday, February 24th at 7:30PM, the Raiders take on the Blues at Alcott Arena in what will be the fourth and final regular season meeting for the two clubs. The Raiders this season hold a 1-1-1-0 record against Collingwood with their last match ending in a 3-0 win for the Blues.

Heading into Saturday, the Blues’ record for the season is 45-6-0-1. Collingwood sits in first place in the West Conference with 91 points so far this season. Their record in their last ten games is 9-1-0-0 with their last appearance being a 5-0 win over Wellington on February 19th. On the road this season, the Blues hold a 21-4-1-0 record. Special teams percentages for the Blues away from home this year include 17.78% on the power play, and 86.36% on the penalty kill. Leading scorer for the Blues is #8 Dylan Hudon (29-43-72).

The Raiders, after Thursday night’s big 6-1 win, now sit at 27-19-1-4, good for 59 points and sole possession of 5th in the West. In their last ten games, Georgetown is 7-3-0-0 and had won five of their last six games. Georgetown’s also riding a two game winning streak. At home this year, GTown has a record of 15-7-2-0. Special teams at home for the Raiders include a 38.3% effective powerplay, and a 64.58% effective penalty kill. Leading scorer for your Raiders is #91 Quinn Tavares (25-34-59).

This is a massive game for Georgetown. Collingwood has won 45 games this season, but has lost and tied one game to the Raiders. The game that Collingwood did beat Georgetown in was a 4-3 double overtime win with under a minute left in the frame. My point to this is that the Raiders have had success against the best team in the Ontario Junior Hockey League this year, something that the vast majority of the league can’t say they have had. All three of the games between these clubs have been close and relatively low in scoring, with the biggest margin of victory being a 3-0 win for Collingwood on December 22, 2023. The Raiders have to find a way to crack through Collingwood’s defensive structure and try to score in the same manner they did on Thursday night. Special teams are going to be a difference maker as well; limiting the Blues’ opportunities on the man advantage will help GTown be successful. Collingwood is a team that can score goals, evidenced by a +190 goal differential and two 10 goal games in their last five contests. Georgetown is going to have to harness the same defensive responsibility that has given them a 1-1-1-0 record against Collingwood this year. Odd man rushes continue to be a large contributor to scoring for Georgetown, something we can expect to see again. Georgetown’s forwards are quick and can make an out of place defender pay the price quickly. This is the ultimate test for your Raiders, who are in excellent form and are gearing up for a deep post season run. A win against the best team in the league is one of the largest confidence boosters the Raiders could receive. The Raiders will be up to the task and hungry to grab another big win.
