The Georgetown Raiders finished up the 2023 portion of the OJHL schedule this past Saturday night. If you missed the action, here’s what you need to know.
Friday, December 22nd, the Raiders travelled to Collingwood and Eddie Bush arena to take on the Blues. The Blues heading into the match were on a 2 game losing skid, meaning the Raiders had an opportunity to strike. After a scoreless and very close first period, Collingwood scored twice in the 2nd to take a 2-0 lead to the 3rd. Collingwood would add 1 more tally in the final frame, and that where this contest would end. Georgetown played all 3 periods very well and kept the game close the entire way. However, Collingwood just managed to grab the victory. Georgetown had many chances during this contest but couldn’t seem to break through. The season series between these two clubs now sits at 1-1-0-1. Georgetown has held the Blues to 3 close games, albeit only winning 1. This is something to be proud of as many other teams can’t say the same thing.
The Raiders looked to turn things around Saturday night as they head into Toronto to face the Patriots. As a stark contrast to the game before, this game ended in a 7-5 loss. GTown jumped out to an early 3-1 lead after the 1st period with goals from Kristian Lamanna, Brandon Kakei, and Kaleb Nelson. However, the Patriots would answer with 4 straight goals in the second period to take a 5-3 lead into the third. Quinn Tavares scored a power play goal to make it a 1 goal game early in the 3rd. However, the Patriots scored shortly after to extend the lead to 6-4. The Raiders showed fight as Kristian Lamanna made it 6-5 about halfway through the period. Unfortunately, Toronto scored later in the frame and 7-5 is where this game would end. Taking a positive spin, the Raiders showed resiliency and a commitment to staying in the game after a tough second period allowing 4 straight goals. Having it be a 1 goal game heading into the back half of the 3rd period was impressive. The scoresheet might’ve not ended up the way we’d have liked, but it’s always important to highlights the positives in a loss.
Georgetown is now finished with OJHL action for 2023! Our first game back will be Saturday, January 6th, 2024 at 5:30PM at home against the Niagara Falls Canucks. The next day, Sunday, January 7th, at 5:30PM, the Raidets will travel to Western New York for a matchup with the Buffalo Jr. Sabres.
