If you enjoy a comeback story, this past Saturday night the Georgetown Raiders served up just that.
Down 3-2 to the Oakville Blades after 40 minutes, the Raiders needed a spark. The game was close to this point; Georgetown with 28 shots on net, Oakville with 26. The Blades with a one goal advantage heading into the final frame. Then – at the 2:01 mark of the third, Carter Real tucks a cross-crease feed from Luke Tuin to knot the contest at three apiece. This proved to be the turning point for the Raiders and they took off from there. Forward Brandon Kakei gave the Raiders the 4-3 lead at the 17:07 mark late in the third period. From there, the Raiders used the momentum they had cultivated the whole period to hold off a late Blades attack. This was capped off with Carter Real sealing the deal with an empty net goal to secure the win. 5-3 was your final.
For Georgetown, this was an important win. A rivalry game against a close geographical foe, and close in the standings for valuable points. Oakville’s seven game winning streak was also put to a halt at the hands of the Raiders. Georgetown now sits at 5th in the Western Conference at 16 points after the win, just 1 point shy of Oakville for 3rd and 5 back of Milton for second. Consider this a statement game for the Raiders; showcasing their impressive ability to dig deep and find a way to take command of a game in just 20 minutes.
Next up for the Raiders are two matchups this week. Thursday, Oct. 19 at 7:10PM sees the Raiders make their first trip to Leamington of the season for a battle with the Flyers. On Saturday, Oct. 21 at 5:30PM, the Raiders return home to Alcott Arena for a rivalry game battle with the Burlington Cougars. Stay tuned for the preview article this week.
